One of the best parts of volunteering: everyone walks away with something meaningful. Each Friday in June, Recycle-A-Bicycle's Long Island City location opens its doors to corporate volunteer groups, inviting them to lend a hand in the bike shop. While these teams help Recycle-A-Bicycle and Bike New York assemble a full stock of swap-ready bicycles for monthly Bike Bonanza events, they're also gaining the fundamentals of bike repair – and with that little bit of knowledge, they’re empowered to give kids the joy and freedom of their very own bike.
Hope everyone’s 2017 is off to a roaring start! Bike New York volunteer Joanna Giordano’s certainly is, largely because of how well her year began last year. As a New Year’s resolution, despite not owning a bike, she set the admirable goal of becoming a bike commuter.
We asked several of our volunteers what it's like to help empower their fellow New Yorkers with the skills and confidence to ride. Here's what they had to say. To learn how you can help empower more New Yorkers to grab life by the handlebars, click here—and spread the word!
