On Sunday, May 1, cyclists of all skill levels will come from around the world to roll through every borough of New York City on streets totally free of cars. For one day, the roads are yours, the bridges are yours, the City is yours—there’s no better way to experience NYC.

Produced in conjunction with the City of New York, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is a charitable ride that funds free bike education programs reaching thousands of New Yorkers each year. In response to the pandemic, our programming went virtual—we taught more than 30,000 kids and adults critical bike skills in 2020 alone. When you ride with Bike New York, you’re helping us in our mission to empower more New Yorkers with the skills to ride safely and confidently on city streets.

Standard (Adult & Youth)

Standard registration for adults and youths costs $112, $23 of which is a tax-deductible charitable donation to Bike New York to fund our free bike education programs. Standard registration includes:

Driving & Parking

We recommend that participants driving to the TD Five Boro Bike Tour carpool and park in Staten Island in the morning. Parking will be easier, and you’ll avoid waiting for the ferry at the end of the day. If you park on the street, please observe all posted parking restrictions. Cars parked along the Tour Route will be towed.

Stay tuned for more information on specific parking options as the Tour approaches.

Bike

We’re quite partial to this option. From anywhere in Manhattan or downtown Brooklyn, the best way to get to the Start Area is by bike. The Hudson River Greenway and Broadway both lead directly to Bowling Green. For detailed directions, use Google Maps to plan your route. Be sure to click the bicycle icon.

Subway

Note that some subway stations do not accommodate bikes. The MTA requests that participants do not bring bikes on the L/M/G trains. Visit www.mta.info for customized travel directions using TripPlanner, or call the MTA for more information by dialing 511. Check the schedule for changes as Tour day approaches.

From Hoboken, take the PATH train toward 33rd St. and get off at the Christopher St. stop. From Newark, Journal Square, Grove St. and Exchange Pl., take the 33rd St/HOB train and get off at the Christopher St. stop. From Christopher St. connect with the West Side Highway bike path and ride south to your correct start wave entrance.
The fare is $2.75, payable by MetroCard.
Bikes are not permitted on the first car of the train.
Note that you will need to use stairs to get to street level, so be prepared to carry your bike.

Long Island Railroad (LIRR)

The Manhattan stop for the LIRR is Penn Station, at 34th St. and 7th Ave.
At Penn Station, cyclists can transfer to downtown subway service or bike downtown to Bowling Green.
On Tour Day, off-peak fares apply and bike permit rules are suspended.
Cyclists should attempt to distribute themselves evenly throughout the train to facilitate the flow of customers boarding and disembarking at stations.
Bring an elastic bungee cord to secure bikes to the train.

Note that there are weekend service changes affecting the Jamaica-Hicksville line.

Metro-North Railroad

Take Metro North to Grand Central Station at East 42^nd St. and Park Ave.
To get to Bowling Green via subway from Grand Central Terminal, take the 4, 5, or 6 train to the Brooklyn Bridge or City Hall stations.
On Tour Day:
- Bikes are allowed on all trains on the Harlem, Hudson, and New Haven Lines.
- Bike permit rules are suspended.
- Restrictions on the number of bikes per train will remain with a maximum of eight bikes per train.
- Off-peak fares apply.

NYC Ferry

For participants planning to travel from the Finish Festival via NYC Ferry’s St. George route – which connects St. George to Battery Park City and West 39^th Street on Manhattan’s Westside – please remember that while bicycles are welcome onboard, there is limited bicycle capacity. Bicycle capacity on NYC Ferry vessels is limited to 8-10 bikes per ferry. Participants traveling via NYC Ferry are encouraged to check the NYC Ferry app or ferry.nyc for updated schedules and service alerts, and be prepared to wait if boarding with a bicycle.

One-way NYC Ferry tickets are $2.75 for individuals and $3.75 for individuals traveling with a bicycle. Remember to select the bike option when purchasing your ticket and an additional $1.00 surcharge will be applied. Suitcase-sized folding bikes that can be kept with the rider while traveling will not be charged.

When is the next TD Five Boro Bike Tour?

The 44th TD Five Boro Bike Tour will take place on Sunday, May 1, 2022. If you haven’t yet, please sign up for our monthly newsletter and mailing list to get updates on all things Bike New York!

How many miles is the TD Five Boro Bike Tour?

The TD Five Boro Bike Tour is a 40-mile tour beginning in Lower Manhattan and ending in Staten Island.

When will I receive my rider kit?

All Tour rider kits have been mailed out. Please be on the lookout for a small white cardboard mailer from EnMotive. It should fit in your mailbox.

If your rider kit was shipped to you, you should have received a tracking notification. You can find this information on your 2022 Tour registration page in your EnMotive account.

Please note that all jerseys and membership welcome kits will be mailed out separately.

If your kit was not shipped to you, you may pick up your rider kit at packet pickup on Tour weekend.

I'm an international rider. Where can I pick up my rider kit?

When will I receive my start wave information?

On April 22, we sent out start wave information, including directions on how to get to your start location.

You can also find this information on your 2022 Tour registration page in your EnMotive account.

If you can’t find your start wave information, please email us at info@bike.nyc.

Can I still create or join a team so I can start the Tour with my friends or family?

No, the deadline to create or join a team was March 15.

If you are assigned to an earlier wave than your friends or family, you may fall back to start with them in their wave.

Please note: Riders may not move up to an earlier wave.

How can I ensure that I am assigned to the same start time as my friends and family?

For Standard riders, you must be on a team together. If you were unable to create or join a team with friends and family during registration, you may start with them in the later of your group’s assigned waves.

What are staggered start waves?

To alleviate congestion throughout the Tour, riders will be randomly assigned to a start wave. Participants who are registered together as a team will be assigned to the same start wave. The start times are as follows:

Start 1 – 7:30 AM

Start 2 – 8:05 AM

Start 3 – 8:40 AM

Start 4 – 9:15 AM

Start 5 – 9:50 AM

Start 6 – 10:25 AM

This year’s Tour has been extended by one hour, which means we are better able to space riders out at the start. Less congestion means a more enjoyable, safer ride for the duration of the Tour.

How can I guarantee that I'll be assigned to the first start wave?

To be placed in the first start wave, you must be a Bike New York Member or have registered as a VIP or Charity Rider.

Will there be medals for the 2022 Tour?

Yes! Medals will be handed out to all Tour finishers at the Finish Festival.

Do I need a helmet for the ride?

Yes. Helmets, and helmet covers, are required to participate in all Bike New York rides. For the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, you must also display all components of the rider identification kit (bib and bike plate), for the duration of the ride.

Can I bring a bag on the Tour?

Yes. However, the following are prohibited:

Bags with shoulder straps (including backpacks, hydration packs, drawstring bags, and messenger bags)
Panniers or bags that hang on the side of your bike
Covered baskets
Any bag over 420 cubic inches (6.9 liters)

If you think that one or more of the above criteria applies to your bag, do not bring that bag. If you do, your bag and personal belongings may be confiscated, and will not be returned to you under any circumstances. Bike New York is not responsible for confiscated property.

Can I check a bag?

No.

What kind of bike is allowed on the Tour? Can I use my e-bike?

Any human-powered pedaled bike (recumbent, unicycle, tandem, tricycle, etc.) is permitted. Also, based on changes to NYC law, you may now use a pedal-assist e-bike in the Tour.

Please note: Throttle e-bikes are not permitted on the Tour.

What if I don’t have a bike?

We’re partnering with Unlimited Biking to arrange for bike rental pick-up in lower Manhattan and drop-off at the Staten Island Ferry (St. George Ferry Terminal) before you get on the trip back to Manhattan.

If I can't attend the Tour, can I get a refund or transfer my entry?

No. Tour registration fees are non-refundable and non-deferrable. The deadline for transfers was March 31. If you cannot join us on the Tour, your Tour registration fees can be converted into a charitable donation to Bike New York. Please email info@bike.nyc for more information.

Can I just give my rider kit to someone else so they can ride in the Tour?

No. When you signed up for the Tour, you provided your personal information. If you give your entry to another person, the information in your registration, including the name and phone number of your emergency contact, will be inaccurate.

What if I am late to my designated staggered start time?

Simply depart with the following start time. Please note the last start time departs at 10:25 AM. All riders must cross the start line by 10:50 AM.

Can I start farther along the Tour route and avoid the start line?

No. Riders must depart from the designated Start Area during their assigned start time.

Will there be refreshments along the Tour route?

Yes. Each Rest Area will have all sorts of nutritious snacks and goodies to keep you going until the end. For those with dietary restrictions, we suggest that you bring a personal snack to ensure you’ll have the right ingredients to fuel you to the Finish.

What happens if I start the ride but cannot finish it?

If you need to leave the Tour for any reason, we recommend doing so at the following locations. If you leave the Tour, you will be riding with motorized traffic and will have to watch for cars and road hazards.

Mile 14: York Ave. and 63rd St. (Manhattan) This is your last chance to exit the Tour in Manhattan. If you don’t want to continue, travel straight on 63rd St. after the Tour exits the FDR Drive. Do not take the left-hand turn onto the ramp of the Queensboro (59th St.) Bridge.
Mile 27: Brooklyn Bridge Before the Tour enters the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE), you can leave the Tour at Old Fulton St. and Cadman Plaza West and take the Brooklyn Bridge bike path into downtown Manhattan. Marshals on the Brooklyn side will direct you. (This exit point is recommended for those traveling with children.)
Subway: The Tour passes near many subway stations. Bikes are allowed on the subway, but some unstaffed subway stations have turnstiles that do not accommodate bikes. Marshals and Information Tents at Rest Areas can provide more details on which stations to use. Visit www.mta.info for up-to-date info.

Note: if you are unable to finish the Tour, you may also take a SAG (Support and Gear) vehicle to the Finish Festival.

What is a SAG vehicle?

SAG stands for Support and Gear. Our SAG vehicles will be stationed at each Rest Area and then trail the back of the Tour. If you’re running out of steam or have a mechanical issue, SAG will transport you and your bike to the Finish Festival.

Is bike repair offered along the Tour route?

Yes. Each Rest Area will have a bicycle mechanic station for minor repairs. Rider assist marshals should be able to offer some assistance for minor repairs while on the route. We strongly recommend that you bring an extra tube, and check your bike before the Tour.

What should I know about the Finish Festival?

The Tour finishes at Empire Outlets on Staten Island. Check out our blog post with all the Finish Festival details and a helpful level-by-level guide. Don’t forget to bring cash/card to purchase lunch!

Can my friends or family meet me at the Finish Festival?

Yes! The Finish Festival is open to the public.

Is lunch provided for riders at the Finish Festival?

Lunch is provided for VIP and Charity Riders. Standard riders can purchase food from a variety of vendors at the Finish Festival. Complimentary snacks and refreshments are provided at Rest Areas along the Tour route.

How do I get back to Manhattan at the end of the Tour?

After leaving the Finish Festival on Staten Island, you can proceed to St. George’s Terminal to take a free ferry back to Battery Park in Manhattan.

What if I lose something while riding?

We ask all riders who find lost possessions on the route to hand them in to a staff member and let him/her know where the item was found. If you lost something, ask a representative at the information tent at the Finish Festival if it has been turned in. You can also email info@bike.nyc with a description of the item and a note about where you think you lost it. If your item is turned in, we will contact you. The TD Five Boro Bike Tour and Bike New York are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Can I wear headphones/earbuds while I ride?

No. You may not wear earbuds or any other form of headphones. According to NYC law you may wear one earbud, but keeping your ears clear is a much safer choice.

What if the weather looks bad?

This is a rain-or-shine event, so make sure to check the weather and plan your gear accordingly.

What if I lose track of my friends/family during the Tour?

Make a plan in advance with your friends/family in case you get split up. Rest Areas are a good place to meet up with friends. There is a “Reunion” area at the Finish Festival, which is the perfect place for you to rendezvous.

Do not stop in the following locations: Central Park, on any of the bridges, or on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE). Out of courtesy for other riders, do not stop in the middle of the roadway. Always pull over to the right side of the road if you need to stop for any reason.

What should I bring on the ride?

While the Tour provides snacks and water at Rest Areas, don’t forget to bring two bottles of water, some snacks, sunscreen, and a spare tube in case you get a flat. You should pump your tires full of air the day before. Also, you will want a fully charged cell phone, and cash/card for food and merchandise at the Finish Festival. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.

If you have food sensitivities, please bring snacks that are safe for you. While we try to provide a diverse range of foods, we may not be able to accommodate everyone.

What steps is Bike New York taking to prevent COVID-19 transmission to other Tour participants?

We are working with state and local health officials and will follow all health and safety guidelines in place up to and during the Tour.

Are riders required to have the COVID-19 vaccine in order to participate in the Tour?

All 2022 Tour participants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, as vaccination is defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and must present proof of vaccination (digital or paper certificate) at the request of Tour officials.

Is there a limit on the number of people allowed on the 2022 Tour due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic?

The Tour is back to its full capacity of 32,000 riders! The safety and well-being of our participants is our highest priority, and we will continue working with our government partners to monitor the changing COVID-19 climate. We will adapt the Tour to satisfy all requirements that may be in place at any given time until ride day.

Are there age restrictions for the Tour?

Yes. Children under the age of 3 are not allowed on the Tour.

All children ages 3 and older must be registered to participate in the Tour, and must adhere to the following guidelines:

· Youths ages 3 to 9 must ride with an adult on a tandem bike, in a child’s seat, on a tag-along bike, or in a bike trailer.
· Youths ages 10 to 17 may ride their own bikes, but must remain in close proximity to the adult with whom they were registered.

Can I bring a pet on the Tour?

No, we insist you keep your furry friends at home.

Our mission: We unlock the life-changing effects of cycling through education initiatives offered to the public at no cost. Here’s just a handful of the programs you’ll sustain when you ride in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour.

We believe that knowledge is power.

Bike New York provides a completely free, year-round curriculum of classes for children and adults at every stage of their cycling journeys, from first rides and fundamentals to commuting and touring. We pioneered the largest free bike education program of its kind and have inspired similar programs around the country. In 2020 alone, Bike New York’s programming reached over 30,000 people.

We’re dedicated to making cycling more inclusive and accessible, and that’s why we hold free classes in all five boroughs at our Community Bike Education Centers. Students are provided with bikes, helmets, and the insights and knowledge of experienced instructors, creating an encouraging environment for building core riding skills—and having a blast while learning!

We respond to the moment.

When COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill, Bike New York was forced to temporarily suspend its in-person programming. Though cycling events came to a halt, the need for bike resources swelled as a huge influx of people turned to cycling for transportation and recreation. We knew we couldn’t slow down.

To address the sudden surge in demand for accessible bike education, we pivoted from teaching in the streets to bringing our lessons to the virtual classroom. Since launching our digital education program and Virtual Bike Education Resource Hub in April, we’ve helped hundreds, if not thousands, of students build their bike skills, confidence, and knowhow—and with aspiring cyclists from across the country tuning in to our weekly classes, we’re making a difference far beyond the five boroughs.

We're keeping our neighborhoods green.

Recycle-A-Bicycle is our personal spin on a local bike shop. We’ve called Brooklyn home for well over a decade, so it’s no stretch to say we know the neighborhood.

In addition to providing New Yorkers with gear and hosting area service programs, RAB accepts donations of old, used, and broken bikes, which we completely restore, refurbish, and sell. What can’t be repaired is salvaged for parts. This means we’re not just giving thousands of well-loved bikes a second chance: In 2019, RAB reused or repurposed nearly 12 tons of material. That’s the same as saving 77.95 metric tons of CO₂e!

Power First Rides & Breakthrough Moments

We know that learning to ride can be scary, so we do everything we can to keep things safe and fun.

Bike New York works with local communities and NYC DOT to host Bike Bonanzas, no-cost family activity days made to outfit children and their parents with all the tools they need to pedal proudly. We bring our ever-popular Learn to Ride Class for Kids, DOT’s Vision Zero helmet giveaways and fittings, and bike swaps (for kids to trade their old bikes in and upgrade to the next size) to parks and public spaces across the city. Consider it an all-ages block party with bikes.

We're making cycling accessible where it's needed most.

In July 2019, Bike New York celebrated the opening of Brooklyn’s Shirley Chisholm State Park by launching a free bike share pilot program designed to make exploring nature as easy as checking out a library book. The Bike Library hosts a fleet of 84 bikes (refurbished by graduates of Recycle-A-Bicycle’s Earn-A-Bike program) available for park visitors to “check out” for rides around the grounds in the summer and fall.

In the Library’s first three months, park-goers took 8,585 rides along 10 miles of car-free pathways by scenic Jamaica Bay. The cyclists we served came primarily from the surrounding neighborhoods, with 74% of bike share users hailing from Brooklyn. 34% of rides were taken by people under 18 years of age and, excitingly, riders reflected an even gender split. The Library reopened and expanded for the 2020 season, offering New Yorkers a meaningful way to enjoy the outdoors while social distancing and other pandemic restrictions were in place.

We go the extra mile for kids who love their bikes.

We know that one of the best ways to encourage healthy lifestyle choices and regular physical activity in children and young adults is to give them the freedom to explore on two wheels. We partner with Woodhull Hospital, Lincoln Hospital, and New York Cycle Club to produce our Kids’ Ride Club, a friendly, fun group ride program for youth cyclists in low-income neighborhoods. And to challenge kids to see what cycling life is like beyond city limits, we held our inaugural bike touring trip for teenage bike enthusiasts in 2019, a tristate adventure that pushed them out of their comfort zone to prove just what amazing things they could accomplish together.

We help our neighbors tap into their potential.

Last year, Bike New York partnered with One Community, a nonprofit dedicated to professional training and employment placement, to pilot an intensive, hands-on bike mechanic training program that helps formerly incarcerated New Yorkers continue down the path of rebuilding their lives through the power of stable employment. The program focuses on the particulars of repair and maintenance for Citi Bikes and prepares participants for a well-paying union job on Citi Bike’s mechanic team. Recycle-A-Bicycle provided 60 hours of instruction, as well as tools, materials, and support, to a cohort of students. Learn more about this program here.

We're working to build the path to a safer future for all street users.

In 2019, Bike New York began a concentrated effort to actively engage in and spearhead local-level advocacy initiatives. Within its first year, projects included:

Providing expertise and detail to the City Council’s Streets Master Plan Bill, which passed in October of last year. It commits the city to install 50 miles of protected bike lanes per year starting in 2022, and to measure bike network connectivity.
Supplying a broad set of ideas for Mayor de Blasio’s “Green Wave Plan,” issued in July 2019. It raises NYC DOT’s target for protected bike lanes from 20 to 30 miles per year in 2020 and 2021. It also calls for more attention to the quality of barriers along protected bike lanes, bike-speed signal timing, and bike parking.
Producing a Bike Network agenda to take advantage of congestion pricing.

And in the summer of 2020, Bike New York launched its new Street Action Now! program to instruct a cohort of students in how to analyze unsafe street conditions, perform a street audit, and work with community boards to provoke real change on their blocks.

In the event that members of your group are assigned to different Start waves, please ride together in the latest Start wave for your group. Riders assigned to later Start waves cannot move to an earlier time. Riders heading southbound to the Start Line must enter their wave via Broadway. Riders heading northbound to the Start Line must enter their wave via the Hudson River Greenway.

If Southbound, enter from Murray. If Northbound, enter from Warren.

START 3 (8:40AM)

Recommended arrival time: 7:40AM-8:10AM.
If Southbound, enter from Fulton. If Northbound, enter from Vesey.

START 4 (9:15AM)

Recommended arrival time: 8:15AM-8:45AM.
If Southbound, enter from Cedar. If Northbound, enter from Albany to Greenwich to Thames.

START 5 (9:50AM)

Recommended arrival time: 8:50AM-9:20AM.
If Southbound, enter from Morris. If Northbound, enter from Albany to Greenwich to Rector.

START 6 (10:25AM)

Recommended arrival time: 9:25AM-9:55AM.
If Southbound or Northbound, enter from Battery Pl.

After a Start wave is released, the line moves up. Please refer to access points for earlier waves. Sixth Ave will reopen to cars at 12:00 PM.
