Organization OverviewBike New York is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to promote bicycling as a safe, healthy, and sustainable means of transportation and recreation. We accomplish this through free educational programming, dynamic public events, expansive outreach, and consistent collaboration with community and government organizations. Best known for producing America’s largest charitable bike ride—the TD Five Boro Bike Tour—Bike New York also organizes regional rides and small community rides. Proceeds from these events fund our free bike education classes for kids and adults throughout New York City.

 

Job Description: Bike New York seeks to hire three energetic, outgoing, and assertive individuals to assist with our growing outreach efforts. Community Outreach Coordinators will ensure that communities within a 1.5 mile radius our outer borough Community Bike Education Centers are aware of and participate in our free bike education classes and youth programming. Community Outreach Coordinators will meet with neighborhood and community organizations including community centers, schools, public housing centers, youth organizations, and religious organizations. Community Outreach Coordinators will spend approximately one day a week in the Bike New York office, with the remainder of the time spent in the field. This is a part time, seasonal position that pays $15/hour from April through September including occasional early evenings and weekends. There will be a training session for all Community Outreach Coordinators at the Bike New York offices in early April.

 

Under the direction of the Community Outreach Department, the Community Outreach Coordinators will:

  • Table at various community events
  • Attend community meetings (community boards, resident/tenant associations, churches, community/youth centers and organizations) updating attendees about our events, classes and youth programming.
  • Create, post and/or distribute flyers for upcoming events
    Conduct outreach to and work with the local media to advertise our classes and events
  • Perform outreach at Bike Expo New York and during the TD Five Boro Bike Tour (April 29 -May 1, 2016)
  • Post our classes on community calendars throughout the 5 boroughs
  • Perform tasks as assigned

 

Qualifications: Candidates should have a passion for cycling and active transportation, with an outgoing and enthusiastic personality.

  • Two years of college or equivalent
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to work independently while communicating well with co-workers
  • Strong organizational / organizing skills
  • Preference given to either residents near our Brooklyn, Queens or Staten Island Community Bike Education Centers, or applicants desiring to work in those boroughs
  • Prior community organizing and/or event planning experience a plus
