Position: Bike Fleet Mechanic
Reports to: Bike Fleet Manager
Salary: $20-$25 per hour
Classification: Part-time, non-exempt
Hours: Approximately 14 to 28 hours a week, with possible occasional weekend work.
This is an onsite position. During the summer, this is primarily a roving position which will require working outside and traveling to various containers of bicycles located in all five boroughs. In winter, maintenance is conducted at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Organization Overview: Bike New York is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to transform lives and communities through bicycling. We accomplish this through free educational programming; dynamic public events; expansive outreach; advocating for safer, more equitable streets; and consistent collaboration with community and government organizations. Best known for producing the world’s largest charitable bike ride, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, a ride for 32,000 cyclists through all five boroughs of New York City on 40 miles of car-free streets, Bike New York also organizes regional rides, small community rides, and one of the nation’s most-attended bike expos. Proceeds from these events fund our free bike education classes, advocacy program, and Bike Path, which provides training to New Yorkers with modest job prospects, including those who are formerly incarnated, to become bike mechanics.
Job Description: Bike New York is currently seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and reliable part-time Bike Fleet Mechanic. In this role, you will need a basic proficiency in bicycle mechanics and be able to complete mechanical work in a timely and detailed manner. To be successful in this position, you must be willing to work as a team.
Reporting to the Bike Fleet Manager, the ideal candidate will be both reliable and a creative problem solver. Duties will include, but will not be limited to:
- Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner
- Correct use of hand tools
- Ability to diagnose repairs
- Ability to complete repairs in a timely manner
- Ability to clean and organize work space
- Help Bike Fleet Manager with fleet and supply logistics to our bike education centers.
- Proficient and/or willing to learn bicycle overhaul and adjustment techniques, including but not limited to:
o Hub overhauls
o Headset and bottom bracket overhauls
o Common braking systems including V-brake and disk brakes
o Diagnosis and adjustment of varied drivetrain components
o Installation and adjustment of cables/housing
o Wheel truing and adjustment
o Fixing flat tires/changing tires.
o Installing/changing accessories
Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Must have previous bike repair experience with references
- Knowledge of basic bicycle brake, shifting, bearing and wheel systems
- Precision and attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to ask questions
- Driver’s license and ability to drive a truck desired, but not required.
