Job Description: Summer Program Bike Instructor

 

We are seeking instructors who can teach our summer program in Eastern Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Bike New York works with established youth organizations in New York City to teach kids how to ride a bike, to teach basic bike handling and traffic safety skills to young cyclists, and to lead rides in New York City Parks and Greenways. We provide a curriculum, training, and a fleet of bikes and helmets and other necessary equipment, plus 2 instructors at each of our locations. This is a part-time seasonal position, and reports to the Youth Programs Manager. These positions range between 6 and 40 hours per week, July 2017 to August 2017.Youth Program Bike Instructors should have some or all of the following qualifications:

 

  • Be an experienced, enthusiastic cyclist, with a passion for sharing the joys of cycling with others
  • Have experience working groups of kids in an educational, youth program or camp setting, and be able to demonstrate good classroom/group management skills
  • Be flexible in working with unpredictable youth program conditions
  • Successful candidates will need to have a background check and become CPR certified
  • Bilingual applicants encouraged

 

Youth Program Bike Instructors will have the following job duties:

 

  • Teach Bike New York’s Learn to Ride program to children who don’t know how to ride a bike;
  • Teach Bike New York’s Bike Driver’s Ed curriculum to groups of 10-15 kids who already know how to ride a bike, as preparation to taking them out on group bike rides;
  • Determine whether kids have adequate skills to go “off site” for group bike rides;
  • Lead safe, smooth-functioning group rides off site;
  • Work closely with after school directors and staff according to their schedules and conditions.
  • Manage a fleet of up to 35 bikes and helmets, ensuring that equipment is in place before each day starts, and stored securely when not in use, and performing minor maintenance or alerting Bike New York staff to bigger mechanical issues

 

Start date: July 10, 2017 (there will a mandatory paid eight hour training July 5 and 6, 9am to 5pm for those hired)
